That stripe is one of the six signs that the roots are inside the sewer line — and most homes show two or three of them for months before the first actual backup. Roots don't break a pipe the day they reach it. They feed off the moisture and oxygen the pipe leaks, build a mesh, and steal capacity from the line until something downstream tips over.
