When Trenchless Sewer Repair Isn't an Option (and What to Do Instead)

The 811 paint dried across the front lawn an hour ago — yellow for gas, orange for telecom, blue for water. The cleanout cap sits in the middle of the planned dig zone. Yesterday, the conversation in the driveway was about a CIPP liner: a quiet morning, no trench, the lawn left alone. Today, the second camera pass is on the van screen, and the picture has shifted. The line has a collapse at thirty-eight feet, a belly behind it, and a hard dogleg under the patio. The liner isn't going to work. The trench is.

That's the moment the project changes. From clean to open. From two days to a week. It's also the moment most homeowners haven't been walked through, because the lining contractor's brochure spends its pages on what lining can do and very little on what to do when the line says no.

There are real answers for those lines. Some are still trenchless. Most are not. Knowing which alternative the camera is pointing at keeps the next decision from getting made under pressure in the yard.

The eligibility checks that knock lining off the table

Trenchless pipe lining is like threading a sock down a leg cast — it only works if the cast is intact, smooth enough to slide against, and angled so the sock can pass. The host pipe needs three things: an open path the full length, a wall the resin can bond to, and a grade the new pipe can inherit. A camera survey before the quote is what confirms all three. When any are missing, lining is off the table.

The disqualifiers are short to list. A fully collapsed section. A missing length of pipe with bare soil between the ends. A pronounced belly that's been backing up the line. A joint offset past roughly a third of the pipe's interior diameter. A hard-angle bend the liner can't negotiate without wrinkling. Orangeburg is deformed enough that the installation pressure will collapse it. A host rotted through the bottom across long stretches. Any one ends the lining conversation. Two or three close the door for good.

The list isn't a verdict on the property. It's a description of the pipe today. What sits behind the call is a different question: what gets done instead.

Pipe bursting — trenchless without the resin

Pipe bursting is the first answer for a lot of lines that fail the lining test. A lot of homeowners hear "trenchless" and assume CIPP. Bursting is the other trenchless method, and it works on a completely different principle.

A small access pit gets dug at one end of the run, a slightly larger one at the other. A bursting head — a steel cone wider than the existing pipe — is winched through the old line by a hydraulic cable. The head splits the host pipe outward, the way a wedge splits a log along the grain, displacing the broken shards into the surrounding soil. A new HDPE or fusion-welded pipe is pulled in directly behind it.

The yard between the two pits stays closed. The new pipe lands in roughly the same trench the old one occupied. Bursting solves problems CIPP can't: a collapsed section, a structurally failed length, a host that won't hold its shape, even a small upsize when flow needs it.

What bursting can't do is correct grade or route. If the original trench has a belly, bursting installs new pipe along the same belly. If the line crosses under a 50-year-old maple, bursting goes through the roots — but the new fusion-welded pipe doesn't give roots a joint to enter.

Bursting has its own disqualifiers, separate from lining's. Rocky or unusually dense soil creates so much friction against the new pipe being pulled in that the line can be damaged on the way through. A sewer line shifted out of alignment so far that a cable can't be passed end-to-end can't be burst — the head has nothing to follow. Large tree roots wrapped tight around the host pipe can prevent the head from breaking the line cleanly. And very shallow pipes near a gas service, fiber drop, or water line are sometimes too risky to burst because displaced material can damage what sits a few inches above.

When the camera and site conditions clear those checks, bursting lands between lining and open-cut on cost — two pits to dig and patch, restoration of two small areas, same-day or two-day completion.

Spot repair and dig-and-relay

When the camera shows one bad spot — a single collapsed length, one broken joint, one short belly — and everything on either side is sound, a spot repair is often the cleanest answer. The shop digs the bad piece out, replaces it with new PVC, and the rest of the line stays in place.

The dig is small. Usually a 6- to 10-foot trench, depth depending on burial. The patched section becomes a single new piece bonded into the original line on each end with a transition coupling.

Dig-and-relay is the same idea on a longer section. When a 20- or 30-foot stretch has gone bad, but the rest is sound, the bad stretch gets replaced and the connection points re-tied to the remaining good pipe. Bigger trench, same principle: replace what failed, not what didn't.

The math turns on what's above the bad section. A spot repair under open lawn is straightforward. The same spot repair under a finished basement floor, a poured patio, or a driveway changes what "spot" means — everything that has to come up to reach the pipe is now part of the job. A spot dig under a slab can cost more than lining the entire rest of the run.

Open-cut full replacement

When the camera shows failures spread along the entire length — multiple collapses, multiple offsets, a belly here and a broken hub there — and the eligibility list is failing in three places at once, open-cut replacement is usually the honest call.

The whole run gets excavated. The old pipe comes out. A new pipe goes in at the proper grade in a properly bedded trench. The lateral connects to the building drain at one end, and the city tap at the other, and the line is new from house to street.

The cost is real. So is the disruption. A trench across the front yard means lawn restoration, irrigation locates, possibly tree removal under canopy. A trench under a driveway means concrete or asphalt cut and re-pour. A trench through a finished landscape means redoing the landscape after.

The warranty is also real. A fully replaced sewer lateral, properly installed in modern materials, is rated for 80 to 100 years. The homeowner trades the disruption for a line that won't be the subject of another conversation in their lifetime, or the next owner's.

One sub-case worth naming. When the run passes under a structure — a finished basement, a slab addition, a foundation — open-cut requires opening the structure. That's where pipe bursting most often pulls ahead, because the bursting line can usually route through the under-structure section without opening the floor above. The decision leans on what's above the line, not what the line itself looks like.

Hybrid jobs — dig the bad piece, line the rest

Most failed-lining-candidate jobs don't end in either pure lining or pure replacement. They end in a hybrid: a spot dig at the one or two failures the liner can't bridge, followed by lining the rest of the run over the new joints.

The sequence is direct. Dig the failure. Replace the bad piece with PVC. Reconnect with transition couplings. Run a cleaning pass on the rest of the line. Pull the liner from the cleanout out to the city tap, sealing over the new spliced section and continuing across all the original pipe sound enough to line. Reinstate branch connections after cure.

The economic logic: pay for one or two small digs instead of one large dig, and gain the structural rebuild of the liner on the rest of the run. The liner warranty covers the lined portion. The new PVC carries its own service life. Hybrid is the answer most often paid for on a real-world lateral with one significant defect plus broadly intact pipe everywhere else.

How the camera report changes when trenchless is off the table

The push-camera survey was the eligibility test for lining. It's also the dispatch tool for whatever comes next. When the report comes back lining-negative, the questions the contractor asks the footage change.

For pipe bursting, the report has to confirm host material, where the line crosses other utilities (the bursting head can damage neighbors), and whether the access pits land in workable spots — driveways, patios, decks all complicate pit placement. For spot repair, the report marks the exact depth and length of the bad section, plus what sits directly above it. For open-cut, the report verifies the full run is accessible to a trench, that no irreplaceable features sit over the route, and that the existing city-tap connection is sound.

A camera report written for a lining estimate may not have all those marks. When the eligibility call goes negative, a fresh pass focused on the alternative often pays for itself the first time a hidden gas line or unexpected tree root shifts the dig plan before the trench gets opened.

What the alternatives cost compared to the lining quote you didn't get

Homeowners often see the lining number first and use it as the anchor for everything that follows. That comparison gets misleading fast when lining isn't on the table.

Rough residential ranges on a 60- to 100-foot lateral: lining $125 to $200 per linear foot, or $6,500 to $12,000 full-line. Bursting $150 to $225 per linear foot, or $8,000 to $15,000 full-line. Open-cut $4,000 on a short, simple lateral up to $20,000 or more when finished-surface restoration is part of the job. Spot repair anywhere from a few hundred dollars under an open lawn to several thousand under a slab.

A pure spot repair is the cheapest answer when it applies — small dig, short replacement, rest of the line untouched. The trade-off is that the rest of the line wasn't structurally rebuilt. If it's also marginal, a spot repair is buying time, not closing the question.

Open-cut is the most expensive of the four, and the only one where the homeowner also pays for restoration of whatever sits above the trench. On sod and perennials, that's a few hundred dollars and a season of regrowth. On mature landscaping, a stamped driveway, or a finished patio, restoration can equal or exceed the pipe work itself.

The math to run, and the math homeowners should ask about, is total project cost: pipe work plus access work plus restoration plus warranty length. A cheaper line item that opens a finished floor costs more than a higher line item that doesn't.
